Caring for Your Gold Plated Jewelry: Tips from Boma Jewelry Wholesale

At Boma Jewelry Wholesale, we understand that gold plated jewelry is a popular choice for those who want the luxurious look of gold without the hefty price tag. While gold plated jewelry offers affordability and style, it does require some care to maintain its beautiful luster over time that is important for customers to know about.

Here’s our summary of 3 important things to know to properly care for your gold plated pieces to ensure they remain a dazzling part of your collection for years to come.

Understanding Gold Plated Jewelry

Gold plated jewelry is made by applying a thin layer of gold over a base metal, in our case all Boma Jewelry we use 925 sterling silver as a base. Our gold plating takes place using the electroplating process. This method allows for an attractive gold finish at a more accessible price point. However, through exposure over time and natural wear, the gold plate can come off and reveal the sterling silver base metal underneath.

Tips for Maintaining Your Gold Plated Jewelry

#1 Avoid Exposure to Harsh Conditions

Chemicals and Moisture: Always remove your gold-plated jewelry before swimming, showering, or engaging in activities where it might come into contact with water or chemicals. Household cleaners, perfumes, lotions, and even sweat can accelerate the tarnishing process.

#2 Proper Storage:

Keep It Dry and Cool: Store your gold plated jewelry in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade and deteriorate the gold layer over time. Using a jewelry box lined with a soft material or individual pouches can help prevent scratches and reduce exposure to harmful elements. Consider keeping your jewelry stored when not worn in air-tight zip bags to prevent issues with tarnish. Boma provides anti-tarnish kits (pictured below) that include an environmentally degradeable plastic bag with anti-tarnish strip.

Anti-tarnish strips are a safe way to protect your silver and gold jewelry from tarnishing. The corrosion preventing technology reacts with the gases that cause tarnish, keeping your items looking great. The paper tabs are non-abrasive, preventing scratching, which keeps your valuables from damage. They do not harm gemstones, including opals, emeralds and pearls. Our anti-tarnish tabs should provide protection for your jewelry for up to 12+ months of continuous use depending on how well the zip bag is sealed.

#3 Gentle Cleaning:

Polish Cloth: After wearing your jewelry, gently wipe it with a soft polishing cloth to remove any oils or residues. This simple step helps maintain its shine and prevent build-up that can lead to tarnishing. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh cleaning solutions, as these can scratch the gold surface and strip away the plating.

Why Proper Care Matters

Caring for your gold plated jewelry not only preserves its appearance but also extends its wearable life, ensuring that you can enjoy your pieces for much longer. By following these care tips, you protect your investment and maintain the aesthetic quality of your jewelry. At Boma Jewelry Wholesale, we believe in providing our customers with high-quality, sustainable options that, with the right care, will remain part of their jewelry collection for many years.
